AquaTru vs Berkey: Two Very Different Approaches to Clean Water

The AquaTru uses reverse osmosis. The Berkey uses gravity-fed carbon filtration. They're both popular countertop water purifiers, but they work completely differently, remove different things, and suit different households. Here's an honest comparison.

The core difference

RO removes dissolved solids. Gravity carbon does not.

AquaTru's reverse osmosis removes fluoride, nitrates, arsenic, PFAS, and dissolved heavy metals that Berkey's carbon filters cannot touch. Berkey excels at removing bacteria, sediment, and chlorine — without electricity, without waste water, and with a much larger reservoir.

When AquaTru is the better choice

When Berkey is the better choice

The NSF certification gap

This is the most important thing to understand about Berkey. The company has declined to pursue NSF certification for their filters, meaning their contaminant removal claims are not independently verified. AquaTru's claims are certified by IAPMO to NSF standards — a meaningful difference if you're relying on your filter for genuine health protection rather than taste improvement.

Our recommendation

For city water with PFAS, lead, or fluoride concerns — choose AquaTru. For off-grid use, emergency preparedness, or very high daily volume — Berkey makes more sense. They're solving different problems.
