Does the AquaTru Remove Microplastics? Yes — Here's the Proof

Microplastics have been found in tap water, bottled water, and even human blood. The AquaTru is one of the few countertop water filters certified to remove them. Here's what that actually means.

Short answer

Yes — certified to NSF/ANSI P473

The AquaTru Classic and Carafe are both certified by IAPMO to NSF/ANSI P473, the specific standard for microplastic reduction in drinking water. This is third-party verified, not a marketing claim.

What is NSF/ANSI P473?

NSF/ANSI P473 is a certification standard specifically for the reduction of microplastics in drinking water. It requires independent laboratory testing to verify that a filter removes microplastics including polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene, and PVC particles down to a specific size threshold.

AquaTru is certified to this standard by IAPMO — an independent, accredited third-party testing organization. This isn't a claim AquaTru makes about itself; it's a claim that was verified by an independent lab.

How does AquaTru remove microplastics?

Reverse osmosis membranes have pores measured in nanometers — far smaller than microplastic particles, which are measured in micrometers and larger. The RO membrane (Stage 3) physically blocks microplastics from passing through into the clean water side.

The pre-carbon filter (Stages 1–2) also captures larger particles before they reach the membrane, extending its life and catching any larger microplastic fragments.

Does this matter if I use AquaTru's plastic tank?

It's a fair question. The clean water tank on the AquaTru Classic is BPA-free, BPS-free Tritan plastic. AquaTru's testing shows their Tritan doesn't leach microplastics at detectable levels under normal use conditions.

If this remains a concern for you, the AquaTru Carafe addresses it directly — the clean water is stored and served in a glass carafe, eliminating plastic contact entirely.

What other contaminants does AquaTru remove?

NSF P473 (microplastics) is just one of five certifications the AquaTru holds. It is also certified to NSF/ANSI 41, 53, 58, and 401 — covering chlorine, lead, PFAS, cysts, pharmaceuticals, and 84 contaminants total. See our full AquaTru Classic review for the complete list.
